Wednesday Words
Midweek Reflections in the Journey of Making His Words at Home in Our Hearts!
When I first came across Joshua 3:15 in my research for September’s “His Words at Home in My Heart”, with the theme of “Harvest”, I almost didn’t include it. At first glance, it only mentioned the harvest season, without saying anything about growth or fruit. But as I encourage all of us to do—I went back and read the surrounding chapters for context. And I’m so glad I did, because there’s an abundant “Harvest” of truth and application here!
Joshua was leading the Israelites to the Promised Land, but there was one big obstacle in their way—the Jordan River, which was at flood stage during harvest. God instructed Joshua to have the priests carry the ark of the covenant and step into the river first. And as soon as their feet touched the water, the river stopped flowing. The waters stood in a heap upstream, while the rest flowed away downstream, leaving dry ground for the people to cross safely.
In the middle of that miracle, God told Joshua to choose twelve men, one from each tribe, to pick up a stone from the riverbed. Those stones were carried out and eventually set up as a memorial—a lasting reminder of God’s mighty hand at work. And the purpose was when future generations asked about the stones, the fathers could tell their children the story of how God made a way across the Jordan, just like He did to the Red Sea during Moses’ time, and so that all the peoples of the earth would know that God is powerful, and so they would always fear the Lord their God.
This passage gives us a beautiful picture for our own lives. We all go through “rivers”—trials, hardships, seasons where the waters seem too deep and overwhelming. But even in the middle of those struggles, there are “stones” we can gather. These are the testimonies, lessons, and reminders of what God did for us and how He made a way where there seemed to be no way.
Those “stones” are not just for us—they can serve as memorials for others too. They testify to God’s power, His faithfulness, and His love. They point future generations, family, and friends to a God who is mighty to save.
So let me ask: What is your “stone memorial?” What evidence do you carry from past seasons that reminds you—and tells others—of what God has done in your life? May those reminders inspire us, and others, to trust Him and to revere His mighty hand.
And yes—I’m glad I left that verse in the list for September, after all! It’s a reminder that sometimes the most abundant harvest comes from a verse that is wrapped with the context of the larger picture of God’s story.
It is not too late to jump in and journey along with us!! You can find the September list of Bible Verses to handwrite in the https://www.cheerfulheartsstudio.com/september-verses-his-words-at-home-in-my-heart/ section of my Blog!
